Nigg & Shandwick Community Council

INTRODUCTION

Nigg

is

a

parish

which

dominated

and

protected

by

its

hill.

On

one

side

cliffs

drop

steeply

in

to

the

Moray

Firth

while

on

the

other

it

slopes,

in

a

sweeping

curve,

to

face

westwards

onto

the

Cromarty

Firth.

Although

on

the

east

coast,

Nigg

lies

west

and

in

winter

gets

very

little

snow

being

warmed

by

the

surrounding

seas

and

protected

by

the

hills

and

the

great

land

masses

that

jut

out

to

the

east.

Nigg

is

mostly

pastoral

land.

Shandwick,

on

the

east

side

of

the

parish,

was

the

largest

of

the

fishing villages

and

is

now

the

only

one

left

with

fishing

connections.

After

a

decline, things are looking brighter and opportunities for jobs are greater, within the wider community.
